Walk with us the journey of La Finca de los Viñedos Imposibles:
– The Discovery: Francisco Moreno Hueyo discovers the Pucará Valley, predicts its potential to produce superior quality grapes and distinctive wines. The land called for a great wine.
– The House: The construction of the first house was an epic endeavor, with a work team living in the solitude of the area for over a year. Local materials such as adobe and cane were used, and following a conservationist philosophy, solar energy and solar water- heating systems were installed, along with a gravity-fed water supply infrastructure.
– The Garden: Carlos Thays Jr. designs a garden that blends seamlessly with the grandeur of the valley. Stone architecture, fountains and canals, French lavender, Patagonian roses, and a variety of European and native trees give a unique touch to this authentic oasis in the desert.
– The Beginnings of the Vineyards: The first micro-terroirs are selected and the initial 65 acres of Malbec and Torrontés are planted. A drip irrigation system is built, fed by a 4,5 mile pipeline from the high mountains, allowing irrigation by gravity without the use of energy.
– Landslides & Reconstructions: On January 11, 2011, the first landslide occurred, resulting from the heaviest rainy season in 50 years, destroying the entire irrigation pipeline and drying out the vineyards. The irrigation system was immediately rebuilt and the vines replanted. On December 24, 2011, just after the reconstruction was completed, a second landslide struck, caused by the heaviest rainy season in 100 years. The system was rebuilt for the third time, using the design and techniques of the local inhabitants. Almost 60.000 vine plants were replaced.
– The First Wines: We ventured into producing the first Malbec, which, after careful aging in French oak barrels, were presented to the market as the 2015 First Harvest Malbec.
– Superior Agronomy: Convinced that a legendary wine starts in the vineyard, we introduced innovative cultivation techniques in the Pucará Valley, including canopy management, thinning, specific pruning systems, and fertilization tailored to each block, and adjusted harvest points.
– At the Frontiers of Enology: Roberto Cipresso and Santiago Achaval joined the project, introducing European enology techniques adapted for extreme-altitude grapes, using prolonged macerations, multiple pump-overs, and selecting French oak barrel to complement the uniqueness of the grapes from the estate.
– Cultivation & Vinification by Micro-terroirs: Based on studies of each soil type, the unique character of each micro-terroir was defined, establishing differentiated agronomic management systems, and beginning to vinify grapes from different blocks separately.
– Collection Wines: The market saw the release of Tenaz Blend de Microterroirs Malbec 2019, Tozudo Microterroir Alto Cardones Gran Malbec 2020, Tozudo Microterroir La Guardia Malbec 2020, and Tozudo Microterroir Ancestros Torrontés 2021.
