Carlos Thays - An English Garden in the Desert

Por Carlos Thays

From the outset, my goal was to design a park at La Finca de los Viñedos Imposibles that might honor the majesty of the surrounding landscape. As a work of art / nature highly tuned to the spirit of the place, the park had to stand as a recognizable landmark, a presence fully integrated to the landscape complementing the work of nature.

The vineyards and water, both main and utmost appreciated elements were conceived as the key players of the planning. The architecture of the elements played a crucial role in structuring the garden: steps, stone walls, irrigation channels, and ponds, all constructed with local materials such as stone and cardón wood.

The arrangement of spaces like the rose garden, the secret garden, the water features, the irrigation channels, and the orchard generates interest and invites exploration.

The strategic placement of water features, irrigation channels, and ponds provides a refreshing sensation during hot summer days. Vineyards share the spatiality with de gardens through an harmoniously attained integration of production & art.

The gigantic circular stone corral not only protects the llamas from pumas but sets the mood in approaching the main house of the estate.

Native plants were combined with exotic flowers like French lavender and Rio Negro roses, reflecting the diversity of hues found in the surrounding mountains.
