The result of almost two decades in pursuit of a legendary malbec, Tenaz is a blend of our best microterroirs: Alto Cardones and Los Colorados. Grapes from each block were vinified separately, and carefully tended to using unique pruning techniques with minimalist interventions that would give expression to a complex fruit, intense colors and deep aromas.
Alto Cardones is our most unique soils, primarily composed of sands with quartz and disaggregated granite. There are very few wine terroirs in the world with granite soils: Côte du Rhône in France, Priorat in northeastern Spain, and Alto Cardones in the Pucará Valley, Salta, Argentina. Block #3 is situated at 8,022 feet above sea level, with a north-south orientation and a slope towards the southeast.
The desert climate, with only 150 millimeters of rain and an average of 340 sunny days per year, results in highly expressive and healthy grapes. The warm Zonda winds blow from north to south in the afternoons, from August to November, allowing our Malbec to ripen about 20 days earlier than in Cafayate or Mendoza.
Los Colorados is a small parcel of loamy soils with a high content of ferruginous clays. Block # 5 is located at 7.874 feet above sea level, with a north-south orientation and a slope towards the southwest. The Zonda wind lightly impacts the Block from the northwest, promoting complete and early ripening of the Malbec grapes.
The name “Los Colorados” comes from the variety of reddish hues that characterize the landscape, giving it unparalleled beauty. The content of ferruginous clays in Block # 5 imparts the Tenaz a distinctive character of elegance and minerality.
